This just in -- Livan Hernandez is a Rockie. Here's Rosenthal's piece on it:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8416786/Rockies-bolster-rotation-with-Livan-addition?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=3498

Rokies give up nothing and will pay remainder of his salary for year. Minnesota basically allowed the Rockies' waiver claim to stand. I'm OK with this -- he's gotta be better than De Los Santos. If he's not, no great harm done.

Word on the street is that the Twins are ready to bring Francisco Liriano back up to the Major League ranks. To do this they will need to make room on the roster. Rumor has it that the Twins will DFA Livan Hernandez to make room. Apparently Minnesota's front office is willing to eat the rest of his $5 million contract.

Hernandez is 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA. He has slumped lately, but was solid earlier in the year (about the time the Twins came to Coors Field). If the Twins end up DFA'ing Hernandez, should the Rockies look into claiming the Cuban off waivers? He has a good rep as an innings eater, and, if nothing else, he's sure better than Valerio De Los Santos.

Your thoughts?

August Schedule Wallpaper - DONE and Ripe for the Picking!

Just wanted to create a placeholder for my August 2008 Schedule Wallpaper. Yes, I did start it a week ago, but between papers and other things, it just kind of fell by the wayside. Regardless, I hope to have it up sometime tomorrow night, hopefully in time for the first pitch of the Marlins game. If not, then definitely when you wake up on 8/2.

What's been occupying my time over the last week? Oh, nothing in particular.

Go Rockies!

EDIT

It's done! As you can see, my new favorite Photoshop tool is the Gradient tool, which has been put to great use in the previous two wallpapers. This one is nicknamed "Purple Rising"; as you can tell, the purple is settling over the downtown Denver area...soon it will be impossible to escape the purple!

As per usual, low-quality JPEGs are attached below as previews, with the actual desktops under the previews - simply choose the resolution that fits your computer. A word of caution, though. I discovered with the All-Star Game wallpaper that the JPEG previews contain less color information than their high-quality BMP brothers; this means that the previews looked an awful lot more "yellow" than what the wallpaper actually looked like. So if it's a color issue that's turning you off, check the full version and you may be more inclined to download :) . Also, these take forever to download. It is worth it, trust me, because the picture will come through clear and not grainy, but it will take ages. Let me know if you have any troubles.

And please leave comments if you like it or don't! I'm still playing around with the calendar...this month it's two rows again, but the days of the week are now above each box for reference. Also, I made the logos a bit smaller this time around.

Anyway, happy wallpaper-ing! And Go Rockies!

(obligatory reference to www.soxtalk.com , whom I borrowed the idea from)

The fact that this brass keeps asking these young players to go out and play behind this absolute joke of a starting rotation is very disturbing to say the least. Let's see.....We're trotting out De La Rosa, De Los Santos, and Glendon freaking Rusch this weekend in a crucial series, and have been doing this for the last month? O'Dowd should have cut a deal two months ago for a starting pitcher when it was evident that Morales was not in the realm of ready and Hirsh was hurt. He bemoans that teams wanted prospects, but guess what Dan, the price goes up when the stakes are highest. Had you and the rest of the front office been forward thinking, you could have had Josh Fogg, Ian Snell, and Tim Redding for much less than what was being demanded this past week. Rant, rant, rant. Very frustrating, and if I am Matt Holliday or Garret Atkins, I want nothing to do with this farm team down the road unless I see a real commitment to winning from the top of the organization.

Best time is now for Holliday trade?

The Rockies don't always have great timing when it comes to optimizing trade value. That's not easy, but often they hold onto guys too long to see their worth erode -- and sometimes teams make hasty decisions and give up a player too soon.

Now might be the time for Holliday to be dealt. As a fan, I actually would like to see them pick up another inexpensive starter to help this team finish out the year and give these guys another shot at late-season heroics since they've gotten some new life recently, but the way things are developing now makes me think that this might be the best time to get the most for Holliday if they are going to end up trading him anyway this winter. The less time he would have with a trade partner (if dealt this winter or especially next July), the lower his value may go. Right now he can help someone like the Red Sox with two playoff chases at least. Beyond that, the opportunities seem to be shrinking.

The Angels, Red Sox, and Yankees are teams that often pop-up in Holliday discussions for future deals because of their resources and use for a big bat in pennant runs. There are other teams too obviously where he could ultimately go (including staying right here as fans cross their fingers), but some of those windows might be closing a bit today.

If Boston moves Manny and gets a replacement OFer today, that might take the most likely destination out for us (although last word was that the proposed 3-way was dead). Other than the two front offices squabbling in the past, Holliday to the Red Sox next year as they replace Manny makes a lot of sense with the BoSox having some young players the Rockies would like and saw some of them first-hand in the Series as they helped bring us down.

If Bay became a Red Sox to finish out the year, maybe Holliday still works his way to Boston this off-season with Bay coming to us as he would not cost as much and be something of a reasonable replacement the franchise could use for justification. But Boston may get their long-term Manny replacement already today if he’s traded as both sides want there and not be in the Holliday bidding next winter.

The Yankees are always a possibility for great players who are going to get great contracts as they can afford it more than most. However, they are shifting away from dealing prospects, and more likely to go out and sign CC Sabathia for their big splash instead of giving up a ton of prospects and cash for Holliday.

The Angels recently got their big bat that was missing in Mark Teixeira, and I think probably make a long-term commitment there -- especially if things go well this October for them together. Maybe they go after Holliday next winter too, but adding a Teixeira isn't really their style and they are more careful with their prospects in that respect. I don't know that they would give Teixeira a monster deal and follow that right up with doing the same for Holliday at a great prospect/contract price. Teixeira might be their big dollar addition to the lineup for now.

So the Rockies might be well advised to jump in and try to replace the Pirates in that discussed 3-way deal that would send Manny to Florida and Bay possibly to the Red Sox. Surely Holliday would do a better job for them in replacing Manny's production and be a bigger long-term fixture. The Rockies could get themselves 3-4 talented prospects, many of whom might even be ready to help now or next season.

Hermida would be a solid young MLB OF replacement with some potential still who could be part of the core here if/when healthy. SP Ryan Tucker and/or OF Michael Stanton could be other possibilities from the Fish along with seeing if we could get an Ellsbury (since he's down a bit this year and fans would love to see on the other side from the Series) or young pitching prospects from the BoSox for an MVP type bat in the prime of his career.

So I think now might be the best time to sneak into that deal and get the most for Holliday before we find out we waited too long again. However, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to wait if the Rockies never find what they are looking for in a Holliday deal and just bite the bullet to sign him otherwise. That would make a lot of fans happy. For me personally, I think they can find offense overall here without creating another Helton-type deal that may hurt us down the road and would rather see that spread around a bit. If they also think that or are convinced that they can't sign him, then they ought to give the Red Sox and Marlins a call about replacing the hesitant Pirates and getting their load of youngsters now while they are to be had before it might be too late.

Take a look at the following list of players and their OPS

David Wright .912

Ian Kinsler. 912

Jason Giambi .916

????????? .918

Conor Jackson .918

Hanley Ramirez .921

Grady Sizemore .921

So if you were a manager you'd probably want our mystery man above to be in the lineup as much as possible, right? That is if your goal is to score as many runs as possible.

So who is our mystery man? None other than Chris Iannetta, riding the bench tonight with Torrealba ( .693 OPS) getting the start.

Torrealba has had 9 starts already in July, to Iannetta's 14.

I can only help but wonder what our record would have been with Iannetta and his .900 OPS in our lineup more frequently the entire year.

How is this possibly justifiable? Is catcher so demanding a position for a 25-year old that he can only play in 60% of the games? Russell Martin (another 25-year old catcher) doesn't seem to have a problem. Are we playing Torrealba to showcase him for a trade?

I wonder sometimes if Hurdle really wants to win or not.

Helton an albatross?

The sports editor of my local paper, The Daily Times-Call (Longmont, CO) , seems to think the Rockies are forever doomed because of the Todd Helton situation: Keeping Helton will haunt Rox

Since Ian Stewart took over at third base and Atkins moved to first, the Rockies are 7-1 and they’ve scored 8.0 runs per game. Stewart and Atkins have hit a combined .379 with two homers and 23 RBIs in that time.

Enjoy it now, because when Helton returns — either this year or next spring — he’ll be in the lineup. The question is, who else will be?

First, I don't think the potential trade with Boston 18 months ago was that close to becoming a reality, particularly from the RedSox end. I definitely don't think Helton will be rushed back into the starting lineup if and when he returns this season. Management will play it very cautiously, while at the same time relishing the production for the stretch run of the new Stewart at third--Atkins at first combo.

Regarding the Daily Times-Call, the Longmont paper is where Rockies beat writer Troy Renck got started. Patrick Saunders was also a former sports editor there.. I met Troy in the late 1990s in Longmont while he was covering a high school girls cross-country meet of all things. Man has he come a long way since, and I thnk Troy does an excellent job. I'm now seeing him in the bigtime reporting in video spots on ESPN and FOX.

Do you keep Fuentes or move him for a Double A starter? Do you unload Jason Hircsh and Franklin Morlaes for a proven major league starter? Do you stand pat? If it were your job, what would you do in the next four days? I would try and trade Jason Hirsch and Seth Smith to the Reds for Bronson Arroyo, assuming they are willing to eat nine million of the contract over the next two seasons. Arroyo is a major upgrade over Wells and De Los Santos, and Cincy plays in a Philadelphiaesque joke of a ballpark. He would help us in the next two seasons.

Jhoulys Chacin with his combined 15-1 season record goes again for Modesto this evening in a 6:05p.m. PDT start.

(Rockies’ director of player development ) Gustafson said Chacin has thrown 143 1/3 innings and might be kept on restricted innings for the rest of this season. . . .

Not exactly sure if this has any bearing on Chacin moving up to AA Tulsa anytime soon.

This is not good news. He goes on the DL with a shoulder impingement

First an arthroscopic "clean-up" last year and now this. You never want to see a pitcher starting his first couple seasons in the organization with repeat shoulder issues, especially, when he's the #2 overall pick in the draft.

And to think, Tim Lincecum was there for the taking.

\rih-NAS-uhnt\, adjective: Springing or rising again into being; showing renewed vigor.

Well now. The Rox have certainly come back from the All Star break showing renewed vigor. Our road sweep of the Reds seems to signal that the bats really have awakened and the previous homestand was not just a Coors Field creation. We are 9-1 since the break. Only the Brew Crew has been as good in the NL.

Granted that we still have 7 games on this road trip, but the way we’re playing the Pittsburgh series doesn’t really scare me. The Florida series is another matter, but one series at a time, right?

The August schedule isn’t great with more road games than home, but the opposition isn’t exactly MLB’s upper echelon. I think we could well be back to or above .500 by the end of that month. September is home game friendly. That’s a good thing.

So given that we play in the NL Worst, and are, as of this posting, only 5.5 games back, I’m kind of thinking that there won’t be any trading away of our more valuable commodities. i.e., Matty, Fuentes.

Still, we need another starting pitcher if we’re going to storm all the way back and win the division.

Arroyo’s been mentioned, (as well as derided) but any other ideas as to who might be available to us, and and what cost? I realize that we’re not going to get a Halladay if we’re unwilling to move an equal talent. But the farm is well stocked, and there may be some help out there in exchange for some prospects.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, and on our chances to make this surge a reality.

The Rox would be getting some decent prospects. Anderson could easily be flipped elsewhere for decent value. And if they could get McClellan, he would be rotation ready by next year. Yet, I have a hard time believing that the Cards would part with two of their top pitching prospects, especially McClellan, who they've been grooming in the pen this year.

Plus Reyes just went a different direction, and I don't understand why the Rockies would have any interest in Shane Robinson.

I've been looking through some stats from players we have in the Dominican Summer League (DSL). There's a few players who are having great years who are repeats from last year - Juan Gonzalez, for example, is putting up stellar numbers this year (2.36 ERA) after he did the same last year (3.38 ERA).

What's the deal? What is the usual path for players who do well in the DSL? Do they get sent to Tri-City, or straight to Modesto? What's the general quality of play?

Again, I hope people don't mind me sharing, as I catch up. I'm sure many who read this blog have followed some of these players for some time now. That's part of the reason for the posts. I actually am interested to hear others thoughts and opinions on these players. It will help to expand on what I am finding mainly in stats.

With the #7 pick In the 2005 MLB draft, the Colorado Rockies select Troy Tulowitzki.

2005 Draftees through first 5 Rounds

1st (7) Troy Tulowitzki – SS: I think we all know “Tulo”.

SuppA (132) Chaz Roe - RHP: Chaz, a 6-5 right-hander, was selected out of HS, so he’s still only 21 years old. He’s been on Baseball America’s “Top Ten Prospects” list for the Rockies each of the last 3 years (#10 for 2008). He made the jump from Modesto to Tulsa earlier this summer with mixed results. He was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week after a 3-hit, complete game shutout against Arkansas on July 11th.

2008 Tulsa (9 GS) - 3-1, 58.1 IP, 4.78 ERA, 33 K/21 BB

2008 Modesto (3 GS) - 2-1, 19.2 IP, 5.49 ERA, 16 K/3 BB

2007 Modesto (29 GS) - 7-11, 170.1 IP, 4.33 ERA, 131 K/73 BB

2nd (52) Daniel Carte – OF: There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to get excited about with regards to Carte. While his OPS advanced with each promotion from 05 – 07 (Tri-City .678, Asheville .765, Modesto .802), it’s down this year at Tulsa. He’s striking out over 25% of the time, with limited power. And at 24, I can’t imagine that the power is going to suddenly appear.

2008 Tulsa (85 games) - .269/.324/.377 (7 HR, 41 RBI, 89/21 K/BB)

2007 Modesto (111 games) - .283/.317/.487 (14 HR, 71 RBI 130/13 K/BB)

2nd (55) Zach Simons – RHP: No longer in organization (Traded 4/30/08 for Jason Grilli)

2007 Asheville (69.2 IP, all in relief) - 8-2, 4.52 ERA

3rd (87) Kyle Hancock – RHP: Made news after being drafted by walking away from his $460k signing bonus w/o ever throwing a pitch for the Rockies organization. (And ruined his college eligibility in the process.)

4th (117) Drandon Durden – LHP: After making 26 starts last year, it would appear that Durden’s been moved to the pen in his second season at Modesto.

2008 Modesto (21 G, 2 GS) – 2-0, 45 IP, 5.60 ERA, .288 BA against

2007 Modesto (26 GS) – 8-9, 157 IP, 4.70 ERA, 93/42 K/BB, .279 BA against

5th (147) Joshua Sullivan – RHP: Sullivan would probably be at Modesto this year (and may yet be) if it weren’t for an injury to an elbow nerve. Currently he’s rehabbing in short-season A ball (Tri-City). But at age 24 already, time doesn’t seem to be in his favor.

2008 Tri-City (3 GS) – 0-1, 10.2 IP, 8/5 K/BB, .286 BA against

2007 Asheville (13 G, 9 GS) – 3-2, 49.2 IP, 3.26 ERA, 45/25 K/BB, .223 BA against

Later Draftees of Note

6th (177) Corey Wimberly – 2B, Age 24: Corey would seem to be a top of the order guy. If he can continue to improve on his OBP (which he has done in his second season in Tulsa), there may be a spot at the top of the order for some MLB team. If he gets on, look out, because the dude can steal some bases (83 for 103 in the last 2 years).

2008 Tulsa (87 games) - .291/.358/.342 (53 R, 47 SB, 38/26 K/BB)

I decided some time ago that I wanted to get to know the Rockies farm system better. I'm really enjoying the research, and I thought others might enjoy seeing what I find. Please feel free to give your comments and initiate discussion (or just tell me to "go away").

With Chris Iannetta having a breakout year and Dexter Fowler expected to be patrolling center for the Rockies possibly in the next year, why not start with the 2004 first-year player draft. (All stats are through 7/23/08)

2004 Draftees through first 5 Rounds

1st (9) Chris Nelson – SS: Nelson was drafted out of high school, and so at just 22, the Rockies continue to be patient with him (It doesn’t hurt also, that they don’t really have any place to play him). After a breakout year with High-A Modesto last year, he hasn’t translated that into success at Tulsa this year. I believe he is currently rehabbing a broken wrist, back in Modesto.

2008 Modesto (3 games) – 3 hits in 9 AB, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 K

2008 Tulsa (44 games) - .229/.298/.349 (10 2B, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 37/17 K/BB)

2007 Modesto (133 games) - .289/.358/.503 (42 2B, 7 3B, 19 HR, 99 RBI)

2nd (50) Seth Smith – OF: Seth seems to be ready for “The Show”. The Rockies just don’t have any room to give him consistent playing time. When with the Skysox, he just continues to rake, waiting for the next call-up.

2008 CoSprgs (68 games) - .323/.426/.524 (10 HR, 53 RBI, 46/46 K/BB, 11 SB)

2007 CoSprgs (129 games) - .317/.381/.528 (32 2B, 17 HR, 82 RBI)

3rd (80) Steven Register – RHP: Register is currently the closer for the SkySox. He had been taken by the Mets over this past winter’s Rule 5 draft, but when the Mets decided prior to the season even starting that they wouldn’t be able to keep him with the big club, the Rockies gladly took him back. After saving 37 games in Tulsa last year, he seems to have transitioned to AAA quite nicely.

2008 CoSprgs (43 games) – 5-1, 44 IP, 15 SV, 41/18 K/BB, .235 BA against

2007 Tulsa (60 games) – 1-3, 58 IP, 37 SV, 48/16 K/BB, .279 BA against

4th (110) Chris Ianetta – C: Having a breakout year with the Rockies. Hopefully, he’s there for years to come.

2008 Rockies (57 games) - .277/.377/.429 (13 2B, 10 HR, 40 RBI)

5th (140) Matt Macri – 3b: Traded 8/15/07 to the Twins for Ramon Ortiz.

2007 CoSprgs (3 games) – In 9 AB prior to trade, he hit 2 doubles and 1 HR

2007 Tulsa (79 games) - .298/.349/.502 (11 HR, 33 RBI, 58 K)

Later Draftees of Note

6th (170) Joe Koshansky – 1b: Like Seth Smith, there’s not much more for Joe to prove in “The Springs”. Unfortunately, the Rockies just don’t have room for him right now. I doubt that Joe would mind a trade.

2008 CoSprgs (84 games) - .277/.357/.557 (18 HR, 78 RBI, 111 K)

2007 CoSprgs (136 games) - .295/.380/.490 (21 HR, 99 RBI, 128 K)

13th (380) Matt Miller – OF: Matt Miller seems to have figured out AA pitching, and really needs to be promoted. I’d have to guess that the organization’s gluttony of corner outfielders is preventing the move.

2008 Tulsa (100 games) - .352/.415/.486 (10 HR, 85 RBI, 43/41 K/BB)

2007 Tulsa (126 games) - .262/.337/.395 (11 HR, 61 RBI, 69/42 K/BB)

14th (410) Dexter Fowler – OF: Fowler is the Rockies center-fielder of the future. Drafted out of HS, he is only 22 years old. Baseball America currently ranks him the Rockies #3 prospect, even though two years ago, he was not in the top 10. And Rotoworld, just this week, ranked him 24th in all the minors in their “Midseason Top 150 Prospects” article. There’s a chance that Fowler could be patrolling center field at Coors next year.

2008 Tulsa (98 games) - .332/.429/.505 (25 2B, 9 HR, 59 RBI, 79/61 K/BB, 18 SB)

2007 Modesto (65 games) - .273/.397/.367 – Missed latter part of season due to fractured hand

Just a thought, but what about this trade ... Atkins, Reynolds, Chacin, and Nelson for Halladay. We still have Morales and Hirsh to battle out a big league roster spot, and here's the starting rotation.

Halladay, Cook, Jimenez, Francis, and who cares.

Inserting a dominant number one into this rotation doesn't only look good every fifth day, but Cook is now against opponent's #2, Jimenez is a darn good third pitcher, and a seventeen game winner last year as your #4 pitcher!!! Arizona has the #1 and #2 evened out, but I'll take Jimenez veres 45 year old Johnson any day of the week. And we just saw what a disaster LA pitching was.

Not enough for Halladay? Fine, throw in Fuentes or the pretty good prospect he's gonna fetch and include him in the package.

And you want to complain about money. I bet every homegame Halladay pitches, the Roxs sell out for the rest of the year. An extra 15,000 seats at 20 bucks a piece, 7 home games lets say. That's over 2 million dollars right there, not to mention food and beer sales.

The main thing is Halladay will be here for at least two more years. If Holiday bolts for free agency, we have extra money to sign Halladay a few more years. Hitters can be found, but an unquestionable ace is hard to come by. Make this deal!

Even if this turns out to be a lost season, everyone will be back for next season, with a healthy Francis and a seasoned Jimenez. Do what it takes to make this deal happen!

Are the Rockies going to call him up and add him to the 40 man prior to the Olympics, or just let him go off to Beijing? It seems like if they really do want to compete this year and try to crawl into the playoffs they should let him spark the team since Taveras doesn't look so hot. Not sure how you guys feel about him (I'm not a Rockies fan.). Also, if you guys are really rebuilding and saying F-it, then it also makes sense to whet his big league appetite. I don't really see any reason for him to be in AA still since he hit, what, 370 in June and is hitting .391 in July with an obscenely good BB/SO ratio? Hope he gets the call up to the bigs- look forward to watching this guy play.

Roy Halladay - Unsatisfied

News: (From MLB Trade Rumors) "Roy Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner.

Apparently, the returns other teams are getting for top-talent pitchers such as CC Sabathia, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard has inspired the Blue Jays to at least find out what it could get for one of the best pitchers in the American League. It remains unlikely that they'd deal him, but you never know.

Halladay has been ridiculously good this year, and he is signed through 2010 at a below-market rate. Doc is the face of the franchise, though, and if anything the Jays might try to extend him further."

Views: OH LORDY LORD ROY COME HOME TO COLORADO, BABY, WE HAVE A WELCOME HOME FOR YOU

O'Dowd - did you hear that? Start offering Matt Holliday to Toronto - NOW
