Around SBN: Coco Crisp Traded to Royals for Ramon Ramirez Bar-right-arrows

Best Rockies Season Ever? Yes.

Go Rockies!

By winning their second postseason game today, something the 1995 Rockies team wasn't able to accomplish, I think this club leaves little doubt that it has outstripped all thirteen predecessors and earned its place at the top of our list. The only question now is, how far does it take this title. Winning one more against Philadelphia this weekend at home will be a great place to start.

A couple of notes from today's game:

Tulo and Matt's first inning homeruns had a significant effect on the way the Phillies pitched to Kaz for the rest of the game, giving him some really fat pitches to hit because they wanted to avoid the hammer that was to follow. Give KazMat a lot of credit for taking advantage of this, and earning player of the game honors.

Clint Hurdle needs to stop outsmarting himself with multiple pitching changes, or we could find ourselves in deep trouble if the Phillies come back with a win on Saturday. It will be a situation where if we take it for the sweep, Hurdle looks like a genius and the pen gets some needed rest before the NLCS, but if we lose, our tired arms could be in danger of letting the Phillies right back into the advantage.

That said, I agree with the early hook on Morales. Frankie was shaky, and it's better to nip the trouble in the bud before bad innings spiral into irreversible psychological damage. Frankie Mo will be back soon enough.

Be sure to check out some of the links on the left sidebar, in a classy move, Mike Coolbaughs' family  was voted a playoff share by the Rockies.

Also, next season's preliminary home schedule has been announced. It looks like we will have a brutal nine or ten game road trip to end the season, meaning we probably want to clinch by the middle of September next year. Not as fun, I know, but really, it's probably not wise to expect two miracle comebacks in a row.

Game 4
Anybody know who pitches a potential Game 4?

by arosenthal on Oct 4, 2007 4:59 PM MDT   0 recs

Hmmm..
I would guess Mark Redman.

by roxhead on Oct 4, 2007 5:41 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I think
Hurdle pitched Fogg today on the thought that if Fogg held down the Phils for a few innings, there would be no Game 4 and that way Fogg would at least get some work in the LDS.

Disagree
Hurdle told Redman at the start of the series when he made the roster that he'd be the Game 4 starter.

Lefty pitching has been what the Phillies have struggled against this season.  That's why Redman got the nod over Fogg.  This decision was made when Redman made the roster.

Oh no they didn't!
How dare they insult us like that... oh, sure, just because we've been around 15 and 10 years, respectively, we don't have the "history" needed to make it to the LCS.  Right, well, at least we don't have 99 years of mostly sucking.

As for that whole "red state" thing... hey, I have no control over what the rest of the people in my state do.  Even though I am a Democrat, I keep coming to the conclusion that most of the blue states are pretty crappy places to live.  And I'm hoping for an all-but-one red state LCS, since, well, the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs all happen to be from blue states.

you may never see the Rockies play this well again ever.  I have watched baseball for 40+ years and never seen a run like this.

Almost surreal.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Oct 4, 2007 5:26 PM MDT   0 recs

Future of baseball
As fun as a run like this is for the players and as great as it has to be in building confidence for the future among the young players involved the impact that this is going to have on the future of baseball in the region is difficult to fathom.

Unlike more established franchises, the Rockies lack  a lot of generational fans as well as lack the types of moments in franchise history that cement the bond between fans and the organization.

I think that this run may end up being like The Drive or like the inaugral season for the Avalanche - something that imprints itself upon fans for a lifetime and really increases both the size and the intensity of the fan base.

'The Rockies lack a lot of generational fans'
We have the same issue. Everyone who moves to the Valley is a fan from somewhere else.

"as well as lack the types of moments in franchise history that cement the bond between fans and the organization."

See, we sorta HAD that moment in winning the WS... and then we squandered it all by losing 111 games in 2004. :-\

All good points
I agree on the Morales point.  This could have been averted if Spilborghs had made the right read on that flyball, but it wasn't and it's Morales' job to keep his composure.  Still I credit Frankie for not letting the game spiral out of control.  It's nice to know that in all of his rough outings he hasn't been roughed up a great deal, which speaks to the quality of his pitches.  I noticed today that his hesitation was inconsistent in his delivery.  He works well when he slows down that arm motion right before he comes to the plate.  Today, he'd rush the ball back to home plate and got out of synch with his lower body.  He'sa rhythm and feel pitcher and needs consistent mechanics to keep his command in the zone.

It wasn't the greatest day, but I still believe he's our third best option in the rotation and needs to be able to take the hill again in the NLCS, and pray that Hurdle doesn't overanalyze this one start.  Maybe I'd adjust it to where he pitches game three at home, where he won't have the crowd affecting him.

Also good points on the relievers.  Judging by the Gameday radar gun, both Fuentes and Corpas are a couple ticks down from their normal readings, and I don't believe that is a difference in park considering how these readings are attained.  That to me suggests a bit of overwork for these two guys, and it could really be a problem.

Remember that Jimenez is only effective for about 95 pitches, and being a strike out guy, he's probably only good for six, maybe seven innings.  If it stays close, than both these late inning stoppers will be needed for another consecutive game.  That's not a way to handle a staff.

Luckily, we return home and are riding a major wave of momentum.  A blowout can go a long way in saving this bullpen from collapsing from overwork.

Final note, anybody else notice how similar Morales and Sabathia's delivery and stuff are?  BA made this comparison earlier this year, and it seemed odd based on body types, but their career tracks are starting to look very similar and I would not be dissapointed if this is the development pattern Frankie Mo took.

Hurdle and Handling the Pitchers
Well, He's left a pitcher in to bat, only to pull him before he pitches another inning...twice! This makes no sense on any level.  It's undeniably stupid.

I'm ok with pulling Morales. Carrying 12 pitchers allows for making quick hooks.  Morales wasn't on today.  I do worry Hurdle will replace Morales in the next round of the playoffs with Cook or with Fogg.

Now up 10-5...why was Fuentes and Corpas in the game? I realize they have tomorrow off, and may have a couple more days off before the NLCS starts if they win Saturday night.  Herges or Bucholtz would have been better choices. Fuentes does seem to get tired if over used...and gets off if underused.

Resign Kazuo Matsui! Hurdle is still an idiot!

by Redhawk on Oct 4, 2007 6:58 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah,
he was out of sync and plus you know he's an emotional pitcher. He really took offense to that automatic walk (I can just hear the Spanish cussing now). It would be a shame for them to pull him out of rotation just yet. I know that people are expecting so much from him and he can handle the pressure, but I still remind myself that he's just 21 and has only been in the bigs since August and it's his first playoffs (although he was on the Leones team who won the Caribe Series two years ago). I think the next game for him will be different, if given the opportunity. I think he'd keep his focus better because he's already faced it before.

Just got back from Philly...
It was insane at the park today. The fans were into it, until Manuel made the questionable move to bring  Lhose in. Kaz's slam killed the crowd. Morales looked shaky from the get go, although the ball was flying out. Fogg did a good job of holding the  game when he came in. I think that Hurdle did a decent enough job with the bullpen today, given that there is a rest day tommorow. It was just one of those days where the hitters had an advantage over the pitchers. Jose frickin Mesa got innings today, and kind of cost  the Phillies the game. Jose frickin Mesa...hilarious.

Oh, we got Ubaldo to give us a ball during BP. He looked like he was focusing for game three already.

Hi, a Mets fan here to say congrats
and thank you for taking the first two from the Phils and on their home turf no less. Watching the game today, I knew Kaz was going to come up big. A lot of us felt bad for the troubles he had in NY and have been glad that he's done well with the Rockies. Living in NJ, I don't see your team play much, so this has been a treat.

Maybe next year the Mets will get their act together, and we'll see you in the playoffs. Until then, yours is an exciting team to watch, and since I'm a fan of NL-style baseball, I hope the Rockies will make it all the way to the WS and beat whatever AL upstart they face there.

Money quote from the RMN:
"The last couple times, my heart was beating out of my chest the entire game," Speier said. "I actually asked (rehabilitation coordinator) Scotty Murayama what the symptoms of a heart attack feel like, because I really believed that I was having one. I could see my pulse coming out of my wrist.

"He said, `I could probably describe to you what's going on with me right now and that's probably what it feels like.' "

Gee. That sounds familiar.

Play like there's no tomorrow...
I don't mind Hurdle playing his bullpen the way he has lately. It's better than how Piniella managed last night's Cubs game when he pulled his workhorse Zambrano so he would be ready for game 4.

Seriously, now we're looking at a sweep and rest, while the Cubs might not make it to game 4.

by Charlie77 on Oct 4, 2007 10:23 PM MDT   0 recs

Play to win
There isn't any point in playing for tommorow, or next week.

Hurdle has managed so far like every game is a must win game (and I agree with that strategy, especially in a short series).

Throw the best guys out there and live and die by whether they have enough left in the tank to get it done.

by MADness on Oct 4, 2007 10:36 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Comforting?
A "World Series Champion" only has to play three games above .500. With what we went through in September........this seems like a lock. We don't have to be concerned with others losing or if we lose we're gone. I like the attitude that the team has taken in playing the next game and not looking ahead or back at our achievements. But the events of September have given us a great mind set with the game at hand. Clint Hurdle should be recognized for what he has done, he, in my opinion is worthy of Manager of The Year.

by moose on Oct 4, 2007 10:33 PM MDT   0 recs

Hurdle, Fogg, Torrealba...
Three much-maligned individuals who should be back next year.

With Hurdle, all I have to do is read his post-game interviews and it's apparent that he is at the center of our teams' success.  Sure, sometimes his gut betrays us all, but he has helped create an atmosphere of cooperation and teamwork among his players that, I imagine, is rare.  And, friends, we have one of the the best defensive teams in history, an incredible offense, and a pitching staff that is far better than it should be.  Can anyone argue that Hurdle has nothing to do with these things?

Fogg -- honestly, I don't understand why people don't like him.  Sure, he has had more awful starts than, say, Francis (who has had quite a few), but he knows how to pitch.

And Torrealba is great for this team.  I don't understand why some people think otherwise.  His hitting is unremarkable, and he's not good with base-stealers, but his energy and intelligent leadership behind the plate is apparent whenever I watch a game that he starts.

Of course, they each have driven me up the wall at various times, but I just wanted to express my appreciation for three underappreciated Rockies.

by dogs on Oct 4, 2007 11:22 PM MDT   0 recs

Fair points
I'm drinking the Hurdle kool-aid.  He deserves lots of credit for the way this team has hung together, fights hard game after game and maintained its confidence.  You can, of course, nitpick his strategy, but that can be done for any skipper.  He's done a hell of a job.

I've never had a problem with Fogg.  he's an ideal 5th starter, a terrific competitor and a professional through and through.  Thet said, i'd rather have a guy like Hirsh, who has the potential to be a 2 or 3 starter, step up and claim that slot.  But if Fogg's there, I won't complain.

I have a love/hate relationship with Torrealba.  I think he does a marvelous job of handling young pitchers in big games.  He's got that fire that good catchers have and can pass on to pitchers.  Offensively, my big problem is the whole "hitting at the mendoza line with RISP" thing.  He's definitely a rally killer.  Ideally, ianetta steps up and takes the top job next year and Torrealba is there to catch the young guys from time to time.

On the other hand, re: Torrealba, as much as we bitch about the guy, anyone want to bring back Danny Ardoin, Charles Johnson or Ben Petrick to replace him?

Didn't think so.

by BroJB on Oct 4, 2007 11:52 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Torrealba
I think the big thing with him is how he handles specifically Morales and Jimenez.

The guy has been like a 2nd pitching coach out there.  I remember watching the Atlanta game and Torrealba was constantly reminding Jimenez about his shoulder flying open....

At this point Jimenez is definitely in the Opening Day rotation (and its likely Morales probably gets 1/2 season or more in AAA).....but he's been HUGE for those guys.

Torrealba should be back AT LEAST in a timeshare situation with Iannetta next year.  His handling of the pitchers (specifically the Latin ones) has been amazing.

by sg8335aa on Oct 5, 2007 5:08 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

And I'd add
Corpas, and some extent Jorge Julio, who was better then we could have asked for, until he imploded at the end of the season (I think due to over use), and Rodrigo Lopez, who had a nice bounce back year before the injuries knocked him out.

This part of a catcher's "game" can't be seen in stats (that I know of), but developing, and working with young pitchers, especially latin players where language is a barrier can't be dismissed or understated.

Also that can't be dismissed is dismally low rate of throwing out runners...he's almost Josh Bard/Mike Piazza bad.  And he doesn't make up for it with his hitting, which is just above embarrassing, even for a catcher.

He looks like a part-time/split time catcher to me. I'd love him to be on the team...just not starting EVERY day.

Resign Kazuo Matsui! Hurdle is still an idiot!

by Redhawk on Oct 5, 2007 8:59 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree that two of the three should be back
And I really wouldn't mind if Josh Fogg comes back as well, although while I agree with your points, I see him as relatively replaceable. Jason Hirsh, for instance, could fill Fogg's role at a fraction of the cost in 2008.

All three of these guys are a lot easier to like when they are playing/managing well, but when the team stumbles, it's easy to point them out as weak links. I honestly think a similar situation takes place in the bullpen, where all of our relievers have been doing a tremendous job the last three weeks, but when things fall apart, it will be the middle relievers like Hawkins and Affeldt likely to get the blame. I think part of it is just the nature of their positions and part is being some of the least talented (nonetheless still pretty good) individuals in a room of supermen.

We're always looking at ways to improve. For 2008, I don't see another catcher that will be as cheap and effective as Torrealba available, so I hope he stays, but I want to see more of Iannetta next year. Hurdle's earned staying through next season, he's gotten us to this point, hasn't he? But that won't stop me from being critical if I think he's making mistakes.

Guy on field
Yeah, I noticed the guy running on the field.  If this was New York, it would have been hundreds of people -- or you'd have had cops on horseback to keep them off the field.

As promised, I stopped by the the concourse over the bullpen and gave Peavy a little bit of lip as he was warming up.   There were already about 30 people there doing the same.  Did my heart good to see some good old competitive fire from Rockies fans.

Going back Saturday and (hopefully not) Sunday.  Should be great, but nothing will ever top Monday.  I've been going to games since I was a young boy -- 40 years or so -- and have been to a number of historic ones.  Nothing tops Monday's game.  One of the best ever played, IMHO.

I'll believe it
when I see it.

I think the Rockies need to eventually have a payroll around the league average of 70-80 million a year.  Currently at 55 million or 1.4 million per player on the 40 man roster we have room to spend some.  So far the Monfort's haven't raised payroll, or spent on FA's. BUT..they haven't really had to. Good core of young kids that have panned out and, good choices on the scrap heap players have meant the Rockies have won, with out spending much.  But that is about to change as these kids enter arbitration years, and then FA.

So have the Monfort's not spent, because they either can't or won't.....or because they haven't had to yet?  We'll see which is the truth.

Lot of class
I've mostly been lurking on this blog because it's fun to see what fans of a team on a roll are doing (and because I've kept track of how the ex-Astros dealt to the Rox in the offseason are doing), but I have to say how impressed I am with the Rockies voting a full playoff share to Mike Coolbaugh's widow (who's expecting their 3rd child any day now.)

What a lot of people probably don't realize is that the Rockies are so young, many of them aren't making much above major league minimum, so playoff shares are important to them financially.  That they would still vote a full playoff share to the family of a guy who most don't even know & who was only in the organization a few weeks (other than a year in the minors 9 years ago) is awesome.

I was already rooting for the Rockies, because you gotta have someone to root for in the playoffs if your team has crapped out for the year, but this seals the deal.  What a great bunch of guys.

by strosnrocks on Oct 5, 2007 8:09 AM MDT   0 recs

Mike was family
to these guys. Even though this was his first year with them, he made a huge impact on them. They loved him in Tulsa and throughout the organization. To hear the guys talk about him and how nice he was, it's not a big surprise that they would do anything they could to support his family. They really are a great group of guys.

by wsmith on Oct 5, 2007 10:22 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I know its a great token but,
Suggesting that earning Major League minimum means their poor is ridiculous. I didn't realise that 380k  in America is such peanuts. In Australia some of our top national athletes in our most lucrative sports earn less than that. Surely the cost of living isn't that much higher.

Sure by comparison to some player's wages it's small, but to the majority of other people it's huge.

by Kindred on Oct 5, 2007 3:22 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

No one said it made them poor
But if you make the major league minimum, the playoff shares mean a lot of extra cash, and you'd want that as much as the next guy. The fact that they could afford to vote it away isn't the issue - it's the fact that they did vote it away given what percentage of an increase most of them stand to gain.

by potterhead4 on Oct 5, 2007 8:44 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs
